Other Rainy Day Alternatives
Want to revel in the outdoors without getting drenched (without an umbrella?) Try a hike in Armstrong Woods. Consider the 300 foot tall redwoods 2,000 year old umbrellas. It will be drippy, but even in torrential downpours, most of the rain doesn’t make it down to the forest floor. Bring a rain jacket with a hood and water resistant shoes, and enjoy the fresh clean air and the damp, earthy forest smell. Got bored kids? Wine caves sound like a lot of fun. Plenty of wineries in NZ, but none I can think of that have a cave.
I love Sonoma in the rain – the wineries aren’t crowded and it’s nice to listen to the rain with a glass of red in your hand. A perfect afternoon indeed.
That walk sounds really nice on a rainy day. Thanks for all the recommendations!
What a great roundup! Tucking this away for my next visit home.
My god I’ve never even heard of wine caves before, but I’m suddenly wishing I didn’t live on the east coast!
I have to confirm how awesome it is to do wine tastings on rainy days. I was recently touring all of the wineries in NJ for a magazine piece I was working on and, in order to fit them all in, had to go out on some pretty crummy days. Entering a cozy tasting room after being out in the dampness and the chill was reward enough. Tasting great wines while indulging in some vineyard-related conversation were the cherries on top.
Next time the Aussie posse pass thru town during less-than-stellar weather we’re heading up to Sonoma with this list in tow.
Cheers!
