Guacamole Day is coming and so are the prizes!

prizes Guacamole Day is coming and so are the prizes!
Guacamole Day is September 16 (yes, really) and we’re celebrating with a fun giveaway.  Three winners will each win a soft-sided cooler with 5 flavors of Wholly Guacamole (classic, spicy, pico, verde, and organic) and 2 flavors of Wholly Salsa (spicy and mild), chips for dipping and a guac/avo gift item (surprise).

There are two ways to win. Leave a comment here either pairing guacamole with a wine—which wine would you drink with guac and chips? (This is wine country after all, there has to be some great choices).

OR tell me what you like to mix in with your guac. Mango? Plums? Roasted garlic? OK, I admit I’m a guac purist…give me guacamole in great heaping unadulterated scoops…I love, love, love the stuff. But I know plenty of foodies that like to doctor their guacamole with added ingredients. So offer up your suggestions.

The drawing will be random, so go ahead and get wild with your pairing or mix-in suggestions.

Wholly Guacamole is all natural, with no preservatives (it’s 96% avocado and 6% spices). It’s made with high pressure processing to keep it food safe—like cold pasteurization—the guacamole stays fresh and green for 42 days unopened in your fridge. And yes, I know I could make my own. But it’s agonizing to wait for the store bought avos to reach the perfect stage of ripeness, and I like being able to whip out guacamole when unexpected guest show up–or just when I crave that smooth rich avo taste (which probably happens too often for my waistline, but hey, Wholly Guacamole was Winner of Shape Magazine snack of the year 2008 and it’s a great ice cream craving substitute, so I can justify it.)

snack pack carrots 150x150 Guacamole Day is coming and so are the prizes!
They’ve also got 100-calorie snack packs  that you can toss in a lunch box. In fact, if you freeze the snack pack, it will keep your lunch cool and usually thaw in time for lunch or an afternoon snack. Can you tell I’m a fan?

You can sign up online to be a Wholly registered guacfan (online e-club) and get $1.00 off coupons.

So go ahead, give me your wine pairing or guac mix in suggestions here by Sept. 16, 2009  to be entered to win (sorry, USA residents only).

Mix in some tomatos or cilantro, for a fresh taste.

2 T { 08.12.09 at 7:51 am }

I love guacamole!!! Try grilling the avocados first it adds a smoky, caramelized taste. Or add a little cheese to it. Just changes it up a bit but still super yummy.

merlot from Mondavi or Sterling.

23 Ruth Bousquet { 08.13.09 at 3:37 pm }

34 Patti K { 08.15.09 at 9:40 pm }

What goes better with chips and guac than sangria? Yummy… and my neighbor just introduced me to a Spanish version that mixes red wine and orange soda. About a 50/50 mix. Sounds funny, but tastes great! I could do that with Guac.

35 Cynthya P { 08.15.09 at 10:44 pm }

I love to have Sangria with guacamole, and like you I prefer my guacamole classic.

36 Kacy { 08.16.09 at 12:24 am }

50 Kris T. { 08.16.09 at 7:41 pm }

I’m a guacamole purist, too, but we’ve mixed in lightly grilled nectarines (yes, you read that right) with “the guac” and found it to taste surprisingly good. Thanks for the chance to win the awesome prize pack!!!

extra lime

61 Randall Grahm { 08.26.09 at 11:15 am }

I am a guacamole fanatic – having subsisted (I am told) on a virtually exclusive diet of avocados when I was but a year old. (My young daughter has a similar habit.) I have found (what a surprise) that our own Ca’ del Solo Albariño has a great affinity w/ guacamole, especially when there is a substantive amt. of lime added.

62 Jenny Hopkins { 08.27.09 at 8:55 am }

In Oregon’s Umpqua Valley there is a winery called Reustle-Prayer Rock Vineyards that creates an Austrian varietal called Gruner Vetliner, and it goes SOOOO well with guacamole and chips (especially when you make guac like I do with hot salsa and diced serrano peppers) mmmmm… I should have bought more of that wine!

63 ckandkids { 08.27.09 at 11:56 am }

I love guac with a taco mix my mom has made since I was little. It is a mix of dried onion, dried garlic, chili powder, cumin, oregano, salt and cornstarch.

I could eat guac and drink red wine sangria every night…

64 Bonnie P. { 08.27.09 at 3:24 pm }

My secret ingredient for guac is ground cumin. Since margaritas are not wine, I would have to suggest a nice crisp Sauvignon Blanc or a dry Rose.

65 Angela C { 08.28.09 at 8:27 pm }

Tomatoes…mix in a lot of chopped up tomatoes for a little extra treat! mmm…

66 AmandaK { 08.29.09 at 3:42 pm }

I love spicy food, so I try to put a little jalapenos in my guacamole!

67 Becca { 08.30.09 at 10:23 am }

80 John Rasmussen { 09.09.09 at 5:31 pm }

I love to mix in garlic and a bit of sour cream! yummm!

87 jamie b { 09.12.09 at 9:07 pm }

I love sour cream and tomatoes with my guacamole… *drool*

89 Nycole K { 09.13.09 at 9:09 am }

I would pair guac with a fresh pinot grigio.

90 Lisa Duffy { 09.13.09 at 2:50 pm }

I love the more pure type as well. I keep my guacamole chunky and barely smoosh it at all. Also I add tomatoes, cilantro, green onion or red onion or shallots, a bit of minced garlic, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, pepper, a dash of cayenne pepper and that’s it. Yummy. I am making this for dinner tonight!

91 Rebeca { 09.13.09 at 3:27 pm }

OMG… wine + guac… i wish i knew… sounds like heaven

I’d like to mix in pomegranate seeds… Weird I know but I was eating some the other day and a couple dropped onto an open taco I was making and I took a bite and the combo of that tart flavor + the creaminess of the taco was AMAZING

92 michele { 09.13.09 at 9:40 pm }

I love to mix my Guacamole with salt, pepper, chillies, tomatoes…the list goes on! I LOVE Guacamole but, can you believe only 1 of my children loves it too and my daughter and hubby hates it? They must be crazy! Thanks for the giveaway.

93 christopher h { 09.13.09 at 11:13 pm }

i like mine with garlic, or garlic powder at least

94 Kathy Scott { 09.14.09 at 7:15 am }

I add shrimp and crab.

95 Kimberly { 09.14.09 at 11:41 am }

I like to keep it pretty simple, but lime or a little cilantro is a nice addition every now and then.

96 Kim F { 09.14.09 at 4:06 pm }

This one is for my husband who says if i was on a desert island and could only pick one food to eat, guacamole would be his choice with salt and pepper. What an awesome giveaway.

101 Denise { 09.15.09 at 8:54 am }

I love to mix mine with pineapple. It sounds awful but tastes oh so good.

103 Denyse { 09.15.09 at 9:31 am }

I’d mix mine with garlic and use it as a dip for chips.

104 dianne { 09.15.09 at 10:04 am }

I’d like to spread the guac on toast and then I’d put tuns on it. It’s so good. It’s not really mixing them together but they’re eaten together.

I drink Sangria and it goes with everything.

122 Molly K { 09.15.09 at 4:32 pm }

I love guacamole. I usually cheat and buy the spice mix that you only need to add the fresh avacado. I usually do add fresh red onion and jalapeno to spice it up a little.

123 Kim H. { 09.15.09 at 4:46 pm }

You have to mix some Jalepenos in with the guac!

I’m with you.. I love guacamole naked like the day it was errr mashed… However, when I feel the need (hubby) to add to it I like to add a little lime, cilantro, onion, tomato, a wee bit of garlic, some jalapeno if wanting spice, and well it really depending what I have on hand… In fact, there was one time we added some fresh sqeezed orange juice and ooo it was heavenly… Odd I know

129 Kate { 09.15.09 at 10:49 pm }

I like to add lime to my guacamole. It gives it a sweet little kick.

135 Marie N { 09.16.09 at 6:46 am }

I’m not a drinker. Well, not since I was in my twenties. And then my favorite drink was a Brandy Alexander served with a sprinkle of nutmeg. As for my Guac…I too am a purist. But when I invite friends over who are not I usually add some coarsely chopped very firm Roma tomatoes to give the dish some color and I set a plate of cheese cubes of different varieties to tease their palates. And mine because the only thing I love more than avocado is cheese.

136 mineola { 09.16.09 at 6:50 am }

140 Patrice { 09.16.09 at 7:37 am }

141 Yvonne Butler { 09.16.09 at 7:42 am }

I really like it plain over shredded lettuce but sometimes I do add finely chopped tomatoes. Don’t spoint mine with too much flavor, I love it just as it is. Thanks for the entry

I think the logical wine with guacamole would be chardonnay (not sure why I think that) but since I LOVE guacamole and I LOVE merlot, I’d pair merlot & guac!! Thanks.

I love guacamole! Lots of cilantro and red onions with a touch of garlic and some finely ground white pepper. I’d pair a good guac with a crisp Pinot Gris from Oregon. The citrus and pepper flavors would really pop with fresh avocados. Yum.

I love Beringer’s white zinfandel with guacamole and chips!

We make a mexican-style bean dip that just wouldn’t be the same without Wholly Guacamole! And the rest of the recipe? Well, let’s just say it makes a tequila chaser taste real smooth… ;)

174 Nancy S. { 09.16.09 at 8:34 pm }
