Free Days at Bay Area Museums

Many of the Bay Area museums offer at least one free admission a day a month. Here is a list of a few of the regularly scheduled free days in Bay Area museums:

Tuesday

SFO SFMOMA 150x150 Free Days at Bay Area Museums
The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) has free admission on the first Tuesday of each month.

The de Young Museum in San Francisco is free the first Tuesday of every month.

The California Palace of the Legion of Honor in SF is free on the first Tuesday of the month.

The Yerba Buena Center for the Arts is free the first Tuesday of the month.

The first Tuesday of each month is Pay What You Wish Day at the Cartoon Art Museum in San Francisco.

The Sonoma County Museum has no admission on the first Tuesday of each month.

Wednesday

explora1 Free Days at Bay Area Museums
The Bay Area Discovery Museum in Sausalito is free the first Wednesday of each month.

Admission is free on the third Wednesday of the month to the Academy of Sciences in SF.

The Exploratorium in San Francisco is free the first Wednesday of every month. (Groups of 10 or more must make reservations).

Thursday

Admission to the  Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive is free on the first Thursday of each month.

Admission is free on the first Thursday of each month to the Pez Museum and the Classic Toy Museum in Burlingame.

Sunday

The Asian Art Museum
in San Francisco participates in Target First Free Sundays”—free general admission on the first Sunday of every month —is made possible by Target. Admission is granted on a first-come, first-served basis. Due to capacity restrictions, admission is not guaranteed.

Admission is free to the Sonoma Valley Art Museum is  every Sunday.

The Oakland Museum is free on the second Sunday of each month.

I’m from DC and so I’m use to free admission. Imagine my surprise when I moved away and every other museum had a pricey admission fee. Thanks for posting such a comprehensive list!
