Sonoma County Movie Locations Contest
In Sonoma County, we know we have it all—beaches, rolling farmlands, orchards, charming towns where (if you squint a bit) you could be in 1950 (or 1850), Victorian farmhouses, lavish mansions, suburban tract homes, vineyards, hey, we even have a few Tuscan courtyards. Hollywood knows it, too.

Here’s a list of 110 movies said to have been filmed (or partially filmed) in Sonoma County (alphabetically by title).
It makes a great DVD night trivia game—can you recognize Sonoma County in these films?
But I’m adding another game into the mix. Do you recognize a house in one of the movies (and know what corner it’s on)? Or can you give me more specific locations for scenes I have listed below? Were you an extra? Or a spectator? Do you know of a movie (big screen only–no made for TV movies) that isn’t on my list? Or do you just want to guess on a filming spot in one of these movies or suggest a movie that looks like it was filmed here? Enter a comment below. On May 1, all the comments to this post will be entered in a drawing. One lucky reader will get 4 free movie passes for Reading Cinema’s Rohnert Park 16 at 555 Rohnert Park Expressway West in Rohnert Park. Another lucky commenter will win their own DVD of Bottle Shock. And one of our email subscribers will win a copy of the gorgeous photo book, Hidden Sonoma.

Nice post! Don’t even know how to compare to that one. We made a movie about, uh, movies in Sonoma. See it here: http://www.inside-sonoma.com/at-the-movies/
Lisa, I’ve added a direct link to the move on my blog, upper right hand corner. Anybody going there can link directly to it. Hope this helps. You don’t have Shadow of a Doubt?????
Hitchcock’s personal favorite and his greatest!
Shadow of a Doubt is there. Check out Showbiz dave’s blog, http://showbizdavid.blogspot.com/2008/11/when-hollywood-came-to-santa-rosa-i.html. He has a great story about being an extra in Storm Center.
I reviewed Bottle Shock, a fairly decent film, for the Press Democrat, back when it came out last July. My story lives here: http://www1.pressdemocrat.com/article/20080725/ENTERTAINMENT/458398655
One of the bits of trivia I heard about the movie Scream is that the film makers asked to film at Santa Rosa High School. The request was denied, with the school board pontificating that they didn’t want their school associated with such a project. At the end of the credits in the film, you can see “No thanks whatsoever to the Santa Rosa School Board.” There’s also supposed to be a banner or open notebook somewhere in the film that denigrates Santa Rosa, but I haven’t spotted it.
Hi. Once again a great post! This is now my favorite blog. I am kind of new to the area so I do not have any inside tips, but I just want to say thank you. I will be watching some of these movies again soon! I just watched Bottle Shock recently and it was fun to see one of my favortie places, downtown Sonoma. Keep up the great work!
In Peggy Sue Got Married, I think that they used 2 different houses – a set or house for the interior and a different house for the exterior.
I’m also fairly new to Sonoma County but enjoy your blog and really enjoyed Bottle Shock recently. No fab insights but keep up the good work!
What a great list!
I think someone could do a great movie set in Ireland, but shot here in Sonoma County. So many of the green hills around here look just like the Irish country!
I was working in Petaluma when they filmed “Inventing the Abbotts”. I got to see them spray Washington Street with fake snow, it was really neat to see.
This is great Lisa! Thanks for putting together such a comprehensive list. I have always wanted a list like this and wondered about all the movies filmed here and specific locations for movies such as Phenomenon. I’ll have to now go back and watch more of these.
Wow, great list! I’ll need to check out some of those movies to check out the local scenes.
thanks!
Most of these movies I saw while I was still only dreaming of moving to California – my dream has come true! now I live in this wonderful county. Thanks for sharing all the interesting trivia.
s
“Sideways” looks like it was filmed here as well!
Wow, what a list. I had no idea there were so many. My husband went to Analy High so we’ll be watching “Mumford” again to see it in the film!
I thought I heard once that parts of the Horse Whisperer were filmed here in Petaluma?
PS: Great blog! Certainly one of my favorites..
Keep up the splendid job of unearthing all these tidbits!
You’re right Marianne, parts of Horse Whisperer were filmed in Petaluma and in Kenwood, but I haven’t been able to track down eactly where–”a ranch just outside Petaluma city limits” is as close as I’ve come to narrowing it down.
cool!!!
Thank you!!
Thanks for the great list. It will be so much fun to see some of these movies again, knowing where they were filmed.
great list. we’re starting our scavenger hunt today!
I didn’t know that we had so many movies made here in Sonoma County.
Your site is great. Keep it up.
Loved Bottle Shock, I used to sell wine for 8 years and always told the story to clients.
The Horse Whisperer was filmed at the Cardoza Ranch (now Tolay). Peggy Sue Got Married, the restaurant scene was filmed inside “Millie’s Chili” on Petaluma Blvd and H.
Hey Kelly, that’s great! I wondered about the Horse Whisperer. I had heard it was “East of Petaluma”, that explains it.
As a newcomer to Sonoma County, I really appreciate this list. Thanks! Now, I’ll have to make sure that I’ve seen all of them.
A Walk in the Clouds was filmed at several Napa wineries as well. Napa is so close to Sonoma County, and we are all wine sisters, so let’s just call it good and drink up!
I think Bottle Shock was also partially filmed in Napa.
